Brussels accuses the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban (picture) of corruption and violations of the rule of law. The EU is currently blocking around 30 billion euros earmarked for Hungary and is calling for reforms.
13.2 billion euros
According to Hungary’s intention, the amendment should pave the way for the release of at least 13.2 billion euros from the EU cohesion fund. It restores most of the powers of the independent State Judicial Council (OBT), which it lost to the government-subordinate State Judicial Office (OBH) through past reforms.
In the future, judges should also be able to turn to the European Court of Justice once more if they want to clear up doubts regarding the legality of judgments under European law. The Orban government had recently abolished this option.
