As part of her crusade to shield the right to abortion in Quebec, Minister Martine Biron wants to open the debate on access to the abortion pill.

Currently, there are 49 abortion service points in La Belle Province, twice as many as in Ontario.

“It is in Quebec that we have the most access to abortion in the country,” said the Minister for the Status of Women on Wednesday, during an accountability exercise in a parliamentary committee.

Solidarity Ruba Ghazal is however concerned regarding the problems of accessibility to voluntary termination of pregnancy services in certain regions.

“A woman who wants an abortion should not have to plan a big trip to claim her right, especially when you know that time is an important factor. It is not normal for a woman from Témiscamingue to have to go to Rouyn-Noranda or Val-d’Or to terminate her pregnancy. It is not normal that the women who live in Gaspésie can only go to Gaspé, and that those of Chaudière-Appalaches, only to Lévis”, pleads the member for Mercier.

Martine Biron, who recently announced her desire to legislate to “sacralize” the right to abortion, recognizes that the supply of services is “unequal” on the territory.

But the solution to enabling all women to have access to pregnancy termination services may lie elsewhere.

“I don’t know if that’s the solution, but can the abortion pill be made available in the regions and it can ease the anxieties?” she openly wondered.

The Minister for the Status of Women intends to address this subject in the coming months.

“There will be discussions in particular on abortion products, tools that are not well known, I am thinking of the abortion pill,” she said.

According to Martine Biron, the vast health reform of her colleague Christian Dubé should also improve access to services related to women’s health.
