“Discount Supermarkets Lidl and Aldi Lower Prices on 250 and 395 Products, But Is It Enough Amidst Inflation and Rising Raw Material Costs?”

Despite the increase in the price of raw materials and inflation, Lidl announced last Thursday to reduce the price of 250 products in its fixed assortment to help increase the purchasing power of its customers. On the side of Aldi, same speech: “Since the beginning of the year, the price of 395 products has already been reduced”, indicates the discounter on its website.

If this might suggest a wave of reductions, it is not. “The supermarkets try to lure you in by telling you that certain products are cheaper, hoping that you will also buy the more expensive products whose price obviously has not been reduced,” says Stefan Van Rompaey, editor-in-chief of RetailDetail, to our colleagues at GVA.

And we are not regarding to feel a general drop in our receipt in the near future. If the price of certain raw materials has fallen on international markets, this does not directly impact customers, who pay both the raw materials and the production costs of the processed products they buy in stores. Finally, inflation does not yet suggest significant price cuts on the shelves. Nevertheless, the downward trend should be noticeable on store shelves by the end of the year, according to Raf Beyers, risk management consultant at United Experts, interviewed by our colleagues.
