The text below is the transcript of the video associated with this article.

Dermatologists not “too alarmist”

It is true that things are not always clear and perhaps dermatologists are so used to being extremely alarmist regarding the sun that we may lose credibility on this protection. It’s true that we are a bit like the ayatollahs of sun protection. You have to understand that sun protection has two values.

It has a medical value because we know, we are in a good position to tell you that all the skin cancers that we see – we talk a lot regarding melanoma which is terrible and which moreover affects young people, but also all the carcinomas that go still induce regular surgeries in patients who today are not that old. At 50, you are no longer old. You end up with scars all over your face. Many of these cancers are UV-induced. They are really linked to this accumulation of sun that we will have caught. So there really is a medical value. The less our skin sees the sun, the better off it is. I remind you on this subject that we talk a lot regarding the benefits of the sun for the vitamin D production through the skin. In fact, we now know that ten minutes of light exposure to the sun on the face and the back of the hands is enough to produce the vitamin D we need every day.

The less our skin sees the sun, the better off it is.

Not all equal in the face of the sun

So daily UV exposure is not good for skin health. In this medical value, there is of course a variant related to Skin color. Of course, we are not equal in the face of the sun and this sunscreen must be absolutely drastic in someone with very fair skin, easily sunburned, light-colored eyes, etc. And she can be less drastic in someone with black skin, someone with mixed race skin, we are already a little protected from the sun.

The sun is Mr. Rides

Sun protection also has an aesthetic value because we know that UV rays are also those that are providers of this premature aging. They will greatly contribute to the appearance of wrinkles, spots and a less homogeneous complexion. That’s whywe can frankly suggest that everyone protect themselves from the sun. Now, we actually live in temperate countries where we have seasons.

And so the most important thing is that when the first rays of the sun arrive, people are so happy, but so white because they are coming out of winter that they are not at all ready to deal with these UV rays and they expose themselves excessively. So the exposure must be absolutely progressive. For what ? Because it’s okay allow the skin to start its own way of protecting itself.

There are several, but in particular two that are very well known. The first is the start of the tan because these pigment cells will have time to produce melanin. And this melanin, it is precisely a small parasol which is positioned above the cell nuclei to protect them. So, it’s a little bit of a cry of alarm, but somewhere, giving him time to activate these shields, it’s important.

And the second way the skin has to protect itself from the sun is to thicken a little bit. And that too takes time. The second mistake not to make is to think that by doing UV sessions in the cabin, you are preparing your skin for the sun because the rays in the cabin have nothing to do with solar rays.

And precisely, it is not at all regarding these famous UV-B which will start the tan, which will start the thickening of the skin. No way. These are UVA rays which will only contribute to cancer in the long term and premature aging of the skin.

How to properly protect children

Well, today, times have changed and some messages have nevertheless passed. But it’s true that the skin of children, babies, but even children is immature in terms of its complexion, its color, but also in terms of its ability to defend itself once morest UV rays. We can see that children often take a little longer to tan.

They are also more likely to get sunburned. In children, it’s zero zero sun. From a dermatological point of view, the recommendation is zero sun before the age of three. Once they are three years old, they want to go play in the sand, and so on: anti-UV t-shirts, it’s the bucket hat, sunglasses and for the areas that stick out, Sun cream.
