120 archaeological sites have been selected by the Ministry of Culture, where visitors can be accompanied by their pets, always under strict conditions.
In a publication of ertnews.gr, it is stated that the opinion of the Central Archaeological Council was unanimous and now it is possible for companion animals to follow their owners in their visits to monuments and archaeological sites in the model of other European countries.
Some areas are excluded for obvious reasons, due to the high traffic such as the Acropolis, Knossos, Ancient Olympia, Delphi. However, in archaeological sites of thousands of acres, such as Vergina, Delos, Ancient Messina, Mycenae, animals will be able to enter under the conditions set by the KAS opinion. Large animals must wear a muzzle, while a leash no longer than one meter and the animal’s health booklet are essential. Also, entry will be allowed if they are inside a transport cage and if the attendant brings with him the necessary for the immediate cleaning of the surrounding area from any animal excrement.
In the meantime, 110 archaeological sites are being prepared, with special cages where the owners of the dominant companion animals can leave them during their guided tour.
