Forbes has released its annual ranking of the highest paid athletes on the planet and there are three NBA monsters in the Top 10: LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. Alongside big names like Ronaldo, Messi or Federer, the NBA is making a name for itself in the big money rankings.
The list of the highest paid athletes on the planet is always a ranking that we like to watch out of the corner of our eye. Already because the sums might make Bernard Madoff dizzy, but also and above all because 3 players NBA monsters make up the Top 10 the Forbes. It may be a detail for you, but for the NBA it means a lot.
Highest paid athletes in 2023:
1. Cristiano Ronaldo – $136M
2. Lionel Messi – $130M
3. Kylian Mbappe – $120M
4. LeBron James ???? – $119.5M
5. Canelo Alvarez – $110M
6. Dustin Johnson – $107M
7. Phil Mickelson – $106M
8. Stephen Curry ???? – $100.4M

Just behind the most bankable soccer players on the planet (Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappé, big surprise isn’t it?), we find the king LeBron James who will touch 119.5 million dollars in 2023. Barely enough to buy a place on the courtside in the event of game 7 between Lakers and Warriors. We laugh, we laugh, but the King has built a real empire both on the field but also outside. His lifetime contract at Nike is not insignificant to this insane amount touched by LBJ. But beyond any contract, he remains a magnificent showcase for the NBA both in terms of his level of play and his media aura. Indispensable for the NBA in its communication and development, this situation has obviously benefited LeBron since (almost) the start of his career.
We then find a boxer and two golfers (well, well…) and then here comes Stephen Curry with $100.4 million for 2023. The face of the Under Armor brand, the chef continues to cultivate his uniqueness at an equipment manufacturer that has been in a bit of trouble lately. But the name of Stephen Curry might not escape the brand, which decided to break the bank at the end of March to keep its jewel. Jackpot for Baby face!
Finally, just behind the most beautiful backhand in the history of tennis, we find the (perhaps) best offensive talent of all time: Kevin Durant. It’s definitely not thanks to her haircut that KD earns $89.1 million a year but thanks to his indecent level of play. His freshly signed lifetime contract with Nike should guarantee him pharaonic results. Like what, there is no need to do tons to be a money machine, enter your shots like KD (good luck).
Beyond the sums, it is a boon for the NBA which continues, thanks to its headliners, to develop its brand image and its aura all over the planet. What might be better than having LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant as standard bearers when you’re no longer the biggest basketball league in the world?
