Tourism stakeholders are concerned regarding the delay in the resumption of flights between France and China. Especially since travelers from the Middle Empire represent a large part of the revenue from the tourism sector in France. But the war in Ukraine complicates transit between the two countries.
Coming to France from China has been a very difficult project to carry out in recent years. After their abolition during the Covid-19 crisis, flights between Paris and Beijing are struggling to regain their cruising speed. A problem for the tourism sector because the Chinese represent 7.5% of its revenue.
In question, the war in Ukraine which forces Western planes to bypass Russia while China has nevertheless reopened its borders. Flights to Beijing are therefore seeing their prices soar. A delicate situation for European companies and in particular Air France, the only French company to operate flights to China.
“There is a competitive imbalance”
“Russia cannot be flown over by European companies, which increases flight time (two to three additional hours, editor’s note) and therefore the cost of air transport. There is a competitive imbalance and therefore potentially in the long term a risk on the economy of these lines,” explains Didier Brechemier, senior partner at Roland Berger.
Paris and Beijing are currently negotiating the number of flights between the two countries this summer. Air France has announced that it will increase from three to 14 weekly flights to China. To limit damage, the company wants Beijing to limit itself to 25 connections per week.
