“Netflix’s Second Diversity Report: Progress on Inclusion in Films and TV Shows”

Netflix has published the second diversity report in collaboration with the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, a world-renowned authority on diversity.

Netflix published the first Diversity Report in the industry in 2021 to evaluate diversity reflected in movies and series and seek ways to promote it, and continues to study progress on inclusion indicators. This report analyzed the cast and crew composition of Netflix films and series produced over the two years from 2020 to 2021 using diversity indicators of 22 items, including gender, race, ethnicity, sexual minority, and disability.

According to the research results, it was found that the participation of women, as well as talented people from non-mainstream races and ethnic groups, has increased significantly compared to the results of the previous report. In particular, among the Netflix works released in 2021, the number of works in which women starred or co-starred recorded 57% for series and 65% for two-thirds of movies.

This diversity improvement was also visible beyond the screen. Of the Netflix movies released in 2021, 27% were directed by female directors, which is a very significant figure considering that only regarding 13% of the 100 highest-grossing films released in the same year were directed by women. In addition, in the case of the series, among the entire screenplay series released in 2021, the work of female creators is regarding 38%, which is a much higher number than in 2018 (27%), and the proportion of female crews across films and series has increased significantly.

In addition, the proportion of non-Caucasian actors in the lead role and the participation rate of non-Caucasian female production crews and cast members also increased significantly. Of the Netflix movies and series released in 2020 and 2021, almost half (47%) starred or co-starred actors from minority races and ethnicities, and the percentage of non-white female directors directing series also increased in 2018. Meanwhile, Netflix Chief Content Officer (CCO) Bela Bajaria also revealed the performance and future plans of the Netflix Creative Development Fund, which was launched in 2021 in line with the latest report.
