Ranked successively 99th out of 180 in 2021; 111th place out of 180 countries and 32nd in Africa in 2022 by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Malian press celebrates this Wednesday, May 3, 2023, the 21st edition of World Press Freedom Day.
Downgraded by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) since 2016 following the disappearance of Birama Touré in conditions not yet elucidated, the Malian press is celebrating this 21st edition of World Press Freedom Day, in a particular context.
This celebration is marked by a frequent violation of the freedom of the press, aggravated by a weakening of the current political situation in the country and self-censorship of journalists for fear of finding themselves one day at the Maison Centrale d’Arrêt de Bamako (MCA ).
This relaxation of Mali, described as regrettable and above all biased by certain journalists, is seen today as a threat to freedom of expression, because there is a mixture of objectivity and political situation to be taken into account in the ranking.
The celebration of this world day is an opportunity for Malian press officials to take stock of the state of freedom of expression in Mali, to discuss the difficulties that the Malian press is still facing and to make a plea. with the new authorities of the country, to further preserve the freedom of the press dearly acquired.
It is also an opportunity to wonder today regarding the fullness of this freedom of the press in Mali, because Mali has an old tradition of freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
This forum will undoubtedly also be an opportunity for Malian press officials to discuss the case of journalists Malick Konaté in exile in France and the case of columnist Mohamed Bathily, known as Ras Batch, imprisoned at the Maison Centrale d’Arrêt in Bamako. (MCA)
The case of two other Malian journalists also in captivity for more than a year Hamadoun Nialibouly kidnapped on September 27, 2020 and Moussa M’bana Dicko on April 18, 2021 will also be at the heart of this celebration.

It should be added that the theme chosen this year is “Shaping a future of rights: Freedom of expression, driving force for all other human rights”.
