Only four years old, the little boy took his last breath surrounded by his loved ones at the Maison Lémerveil Suzanne Vachon pediatric palliative care center at the end of the day on April 28.
He had a very aggressive and incurable brain cancer called diffuse brainstem glioma.
Devastated, the boy’s father, Louis-Philippe Dubé, admits that the condition of his “warrior” has deteriorated very quickly in recent weeks.
It must be said that he had just finished, barely three weeks ago, an intense treatment of radiotherapy, which, according to several specialists, might have allowed him to live for a few more months.
Unfortunately, the disease quickly took over once the treatments were over, says Mr. Dubé. “Doctors make predictions, but brain cancer is still unknown,” said the boy’s dad.
So, almost a week following the end of radiation therapy, the symptoms caused by the cancerous mass resurfaced. “His headaches started once more, he was also starting to squint and limp once more. Then, following a few days, he lay there, listless, didn’t want to eat. He was in pain,” says the father with great emotion. “It was difficult to see him like that, especially when you know he’s a boy full of energy, smiling,” he adds.
It was then that he and his wife made the difficult decision to go to the palliative care centre. “It was a very big decision for us to leave the house. Since we knew that when we were going to come back, it wouldn’t be with William,” he said.
Activities
The GoFundMe campaign launched a few months ago will at least have enabled the family to carry out activities, which have made little William happy, says Mr. Dubé.
“I’m glad I was able to give him what he wanted, without stressing myself financially. We didn’t have time to do everything we wanted, but at least I know it made him happy. Lately, we were doing simple things, like going to the restaurant, or in the evening, I brought him with me when everyone was in bed, to play video games, and I saw that he was really happy. It’s a beautiful memory that I keep, ”he says.
Second mourning
The shock is immense for the Dubé family, who also lost their first baby in July 2018, who died suddenly in bed at the age of seven months.
Despite everything, the couple want to look forward and cling to their 3-year-old little Samuel. “Of course it’s hard for him too, he’s looking for his Willy. I can see that it affects him and it pains us so much, ”admits Mr. Dubé, his voice tied with emotion.
The family plans to travel for the first time in the coming months, to Florida or California.
A ceremony in memory of little William should take place by the end of the month.
