Deeply shocked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022, in Tehran, following her arrest by Iranian morality police for wearing “inappropriate attire”, the Senate Women’s Rights Delegation expresses its solidarity with Iranian women as well as all the demonstrators in Iran who demand justice for the death of the young woman and challenge the Iranian authorities to defend their freedoms, and in the first place that of women.
The delegation firmly denounces the deaths and arrests which resulted, in Iran, from the popular riots linked to the death of Mahsa Amini; she unfailingly supports the mobilization of the Iranian people once morest an authoritarian regime that oppresses women and makes their emancipation and empowerment impossible.
For Annick Billon, president of the women’s rights delegation: “Woman, life, freedom : we must make our own this magnificent slogan of the Iranian demonstrators who have the courage to challenge the power in place to put an end to the terrible discrimination of which Iranian women are victims. The international community, if it is truly committed to the defense of women’s rights, must send a strong and unanimous signal to support this historic protest.”
The delegation for women’s rights is responsible for informing the Senate of the policy followed by the government with regard to its consequences on women’s rights and on equal opportunities between men and women, and ensures, in this area , law enforcement monitoring. It can also be seized on a bill or a proposal of law. The delegation is chaired by Annick Billon (Centrist Union – Vendée). |
