As the leader of the “First General Uncertainty”, Thomas Spitzer has achieved great heights throughout the German-speaking world. The qualified graphic artist also lives out his talent in the fine arts – until July, for example, in the ORF Steiermark Funkhausgalerie.
The sketchbook is his constant companion. Here Thomas Spitzer captures what moves him, and he sums it up with creative neologisms, rhymes and drawings: “Now I have time once more: the EAV is retired and I can draw more once more. That is also a wonderful new freedom,” says the musician, lyricist and illustrator.
“You have to be able to laugh at yourself”
Thomas Spitzer grew up without television, radio, record players or comics – and that awakened his talent: “Because I didn’t get any comics, I started making my own comics as a child – around seven or eight years old. Even then I tried to rhyme in the style of Wilhelm Busch.”
Photo series with 12 pictures
Thomas Spitzer and his wife Nora designed the show in the ORF Steiermark Funkhausgalerie, which gives insights into the musician’s visual world – “actually, unfortunately, it’s only a small part of my secretions. But it’s well narrowed!”

Humor as a “lifeboat in the misery of life”
A wickedly subtle sense of humor runs through the work in his comics, “because I believe that you can convey more with humor than with big messages that are presented dead serious”!
“Humor is the lifeboat in the misery of life,” says the universal artist, “I suspect anyone who takes themselves seriously. You have to be able to laugh at yourself too. And my shortcomings come up once more and once more.”
“Bite well with the third party”
Young seventy Thomas Spitzer is still full of ideas for new projects: “Maybe I’ll take it easy. But I’ll still be able to bite properly with my third teeth!” he promises.
