The Women’s Football World Cup (which Eugénie Le Sommer should play with the France team) still has no broadcaster in several countries including France. Which angers the president of Fifa, Gianni Infantino.

FOOTBALL – Gianni Infantino bangs his fist on the table. Barely three months before the Women’s World Cup which will take place in Australia and New Zealand (July 20-August 20), the president of Fifa once more criticized Monday, May 1, the offers “very disappointing” five European countries for the broadcast of the competition. Consequence: in these countries, including France, it may simply not be broadcast.

Participating in the round tables of Making Trade Score for Women in Geneva, Gianni Infantino said on Instagram having, during this event, “reiterated its call on broadcasters to pay a fair price for the 2023 Women’s World Cup”.

“We have done our part: Fifa has increased the amount of the endowment to 152 million dollars (around 139 million euros), i.e. triple the amount paid in 2019 and ten times more than in 2015 (before I don’t become president)”he pointed out.

He particularly tackles the European countries of the “Big 5” (England, Germany, Spain, Italy, France), whose offers are always “very disappointing” et “just not acceptable”.

“When broadcasters pay 100 to 200 million euros for the men’s World Cup, they only offer 1 to 10 million for the women’s competition. » Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA

Especially, continues the one who has just been reappointed for the third time at the head of Fifa, that “100% of the fees paid would go directly to women’s football, as part of our drive for equal pay and conditions” and “public broadcasters in particular have a duty to promote women’s sport and invest in it”.

Moreover, he further lists, “The audience figures for the Women’s World Cup are 50 to 60% of those for the Men’s World Cup, but the offers from broadcasters in the big five European countries for the Women’s World Cup are 20 to 100 (!) times lower than those of the Men’s World Cup. »

The boss of world football does not stop there. “Concretely, when the broadcasters pay 100 to 200 million euros for the men’s World Cup, they only offer 1 to 10 million for the women’s competition. It’s a slap in the face for all the great players and all the women in the world.” he protests.

The matches of the France team broadcast at noon in the middle of summer

As sports economics specialist Pierre Rondeau reminds us on Twitter, “in 2019, TF1 had paid €19m for the rights of the CDM (before reselling 1 part under license to Canal for more than €8m). This year, the offers did not exceed 5M€”. Partly, he explains, because the global is “organized in August with staggered hours”.

For example, the first round matches will be played by Les Bleues (July 23 once morest Jamaica, July 29 once morest Brazil, August 2 once morest Panama) at noon, French time. The semi-finals, the final and the match for third place will take place at 10:00 a.m. and noon. A slack period in terms of revenue.

In this context, Gianni Infantino threatens not to accept the offers and to refuse that the competition be available in the five countries concerned. To bend the broadcasters, he calls on everyone to “Join and support this call for fair pay for women’s football. Women deserve it. It’s as simple as that “.

” We need you “, for his part, launched the new coach of Les Bleues Hervé Renard to the media during his first rally in April. In the absence of a broadcaster, his announcement of the list for the World Cup, at the beginning of June, might not be done on the premises of a channel, but at one of the sponsors.
