Tension continues on the border between Chile and Peru as a result of the migration crisis. Although the situation has been maintained for several days, There are still no announcements of a concrete plan from the authorities.
The idea of the humanitarian corridor is gaining momentum, but it is also being considered to host the “repatriation” proposed by Venezuela.
More than 15 days ago, a large number of migrants – who were in Chile irregularly – arrived at the border between Arica and Tacna to leave our country and enter Peru, with the aim of returning to their country of origin.
Due to this situation, the neighboring country implemented a State of Emergency and deployed the military in all border areas to regularize migration.
Migration crisis: the darts from Peru to Chile
The problem was that various Peruvian authorities pointed to Chile as responsible of the situation.
The governor of Tacna, Luis Torres, called on the Chilean authorities to take charge of the problem. Meanwhile, the mayor of Tacna, Pascual Guisa, treated President Gabriel Boric as “irresponsible” and “unmentionable.”
There were summonses to both the Peruvian ambassador in Chile and the Chilean representative in Peru. In addition, authorities from both countries reached the line of agreement this Friday.
Defense Minister Jorge Chávez arrived to start the military operation in the area. “The deployment of the operational force is approximately 196 members of the Armed Forces”he detailed.
Venezuela’s intervention in the crisis
After that, the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, and the Undersecretary of Foreign Relations, Gloria de la Fuente, among other Chilean authorities, arrived in the town of Arica.
De la Fuente assured that The talks with Peru are advanced to “either reach a humanitarian corridor or to find some other solution.”
On behalf of the Venezuelan government, Foreign Minister Yván Gil requested respect for the human rights of those who are on the border.
Likewise, it requested to have guarantees for the operation of flights of the state airline Conviasa in the area. In fact, he said that activating the repatriation of Venezuelan migrants is being evaluated.
The second point generated positive comments. However, the issue of human rights brought out hives in national politicians.
For example, the deputy Ximena Ossandón (RN) assured that “The vast majority of Venezuelans who have started have not done so for adventure tourism. They leave their homeland because their rights are not guaranteed”.
Along the same lines, Raúl Soto (PPD) commented that “In Venezuela, human rights are not respected as we do in Chile, so it is contradictory that they ask us to guarantee this when we have always done so.”
