Cancer, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases… Millions of lives might be saved each year thanks to a revolution due to mRNA vaccines.
While they have largely proven their effectiveness during the Covid-19 pandemic, Messenger RNA vaccines might go a step further and save millions of lives each year.
By 2030, according to experts from the Moderna Group, a series of vaccines of this type might thus attack cancers, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases.
This is the specialized site Science and Future who took stock of these perspectives in terms of vaccination called to clearly change the situation.
Ten years of scientific knowledge acquired in one year
And the site quotes a Pfizer spokesperson on the accelerator that the Covid-19 pandemic will have been to make mRNA vaccine technology finally reliable, two decades following the start of the first trials. “The overall approach to mRNA research and development has made a great leap forward. In one year, we have acquired scientific knowledge worthy of a decade.”
If Pfizer is focusing on flu or shingles vaccines, Science and Future indicates that Moderna is confident in the possibility of offering mRNA vaccines once morest “all kinds of diseases” within 5 years.
Moderna has already announced a phase III trial in melanoma (skin cancer) which, together with Keytruda, a cancer treatment, has been shown to reduce the risk of death or recurrence of the cancer by 44%, compared to the administration of Keytruda alone.
But Moderna intends to go further by offering personalized vaccines according to the type of tumor. After a biopsy, the genetic material from a patient’s tumor might be sequenced and a specifically tailored mRNA vaccine made.
Injected several times in parallel with the treatment of the disease, the vaccine would then not only have a preventive vocation, assures Science and Future.
Zika, mucoviscidosis, HIV…
The site specifies that Moderna does not only target cancers. Respiratory infections (Covid, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, RSV) are also targeted, but also infectious diseases such as the Zika virus, cytomegalovirus or even HIV and cystic fibrosis.
Cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases might also be cured by these mRNA vaccines on the condition that the funding allocated to research during the health crisis remains at a high level.
