“Abortion as a Public Health Issue: Expert and Political Perspectives”

Asked regarding this position expressed by the bishops, Sophie Rohonyi answered this: “I don’t think they should interfere in debates like these, which should no longer be seen as ethical debates, but as public health issues. Moreover, the experts begin their report by saying that abortion must be a medical act.” She added a little later: This ethical debate is supposed to have been settled.”

Interview with Sophie Rohonyi (Défi): abortion is a matter of public health and not of ethics.

This point of view from the Défi parliamentarian greatly surprised Eric de Beukekaer. On his blog, he pointed to the “democracy soft” which would nestle in what he perceives as a refusal to debate. “I had to pinch myself reading thishe wrote. The abortion debate is obviously a public health issue, but it is just as much, and much more, an ethical issue..”

The vicar general of Liège then draws a bold comparison with the question of immigration: “It reminds me of the parade of ultra-right politicians when the bishops criticize the non-welcoming of immigrants. Their reaction is paradoxically very symmetrical to that (by Sophie Rohonyi): bishops do not have to interfere in debates on the regulation of borders, which should not be seen as ethical debates…”

For him, the words of Sophie Rohonyi fall under “soft democracy, which denigrates the word once morest the current so as not to have to face the substantive debate”.

Eric de Beukelaer’s text published on his blog in response to Sophie Rohonyi’s interview.

Two questions to François De Smet

Eric de Beukelaer therefore challenges François De Smet, the president of Défi, and asks him to take a stand. “Given that the president of Défi is a philosopher, that he has dealt with political philosophy, that I respect him and that we have exchanged on more than one occasion, I would like to hear his simple and concise reaction on two questions: 1) l abortion a debate with an ethical dimension? 2) does a philosophical/spiritual authority like the bishops of Belgium have a democratic right to express itself publicly in such a debate, even if it means being contradicted followingwards by others?
