Taking inflation into account, real wages fell by 2% last year in Switzerland. This trend was also down among major business leaders, according to data collected by the AWP agency.
Frankie Ng, head of SGS, is the one who has seen his remuneration deflate the most, with a drop of 36% compared to 2021.
Of the 26 large companies taken into account by AWP, only seven bosses have escaped this trend.
Switzerland in the average
Should we deduce that there is a Swiss exception? There is still insufficient data to answer. But Switzerland is generally average, believes in La Matinale Rafael Lalive, professor of economics at the University of Lausanne.
“The richest 1% in Switzerland earns roughly 10% of total income, which is a measure of inequality. And Switzerland is roughly in the middle of OECD countries. Strikingly, it is that in Switzerland, these inequalities have remained constant over the past thirty years, while in other countries, such as the United States or Great Britain, these inequalities have increased significantly.
In the United States, for example, it takes more than 400 years for an employee to earn as much as a big boss in 12 months, according to Oxfam.
