It was the 49-year-old homeowner himself, who was still working briefly on the computer at around 11:30 p.m. yesterday, Sunday, when the power suddenly went out. As he went outside, dressed only in his bathrobe and slippers, to check the power distribution box in the boiler room, he noticed that the garbage can was ablaze and parts of the aluminum garage door had already melted.
The fire had already spread to the garage, which was filled with old household items. After alerting the fire brigade, he tried to extinguish it with a garden hose. However, this failed and he suffered minor burns on his left foot.
According to the police, the 49-year-old grilled at lunchtime and around 5 p.m. poured the apparently cooled ash from the charcoal into the residual waste bin. There, however, it is likely to have caught fire and spread to the waste paper container next to it.
The man was treated at the scene by paramedics. He didn’t need to be taken to the hospital.
