The animal world is as diverse as the landscape. Wild goats rut in Snowdonia, mountain ponies roam the high plains of the Brecon Beacons, the coast is home to around 5,000 gray seals and the island of Skomer is home to millions of seabirds. As part of the ORF program focus on the coronation of the former Prince of Wales and now King Charles III. (Details below will show ORF 2 on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. the “Universe” documentary “Wales – Britannia’s most beautiful wilderness”, for which nature filmmaker Hans-Peter Kuttler spent two years capturing the fascinating natural landscape in western Britain with the Camera roamed.

The smallest part of Great Britain, Wales is steeped in myth and legend. JRR Tolkien was also inspired by this landscape for his world-famous trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”. In the north of Wales lies Snowdonia – a mountain landscape with a spectacular backdrop: Wild goats fight fierce rutting fights in autumn. Their close relationship with Capricorns becomes obvious. In the south lies the region of the “Brecon Beacons”: The hilly landscapes are strongly reminiscent of the Shire described by JRR Tolkien – and are also the idea-giving region for it. While foxes raise their offspring here in the lower elevations, free-roaming Welsh mountain ponies roam the vast grasslands of the higher elevations.

Around 5,000 gray seals live along the approximately 2,700 km long coast. In autumn, when the young animals are born, they often have to brave devastating storms. The only three square kilometer island of Skomer is home to up to three-quarters of a million seabirds. The stars among them are the distinctive puffins. After spending eight months in the open sea, they return to Skomer in April to hatch their offspring. But that’s not the only seabird species. The rocky island of Skokholm is also home to a breeding colony of around 80,000 northern gannets – the world’s third largest breeding colony of these fascinating aerial acrobats. Dolphins also find an abundance of food on the Welsh coast: they use a completely unexpected food intake.

For two years, nature filmmaker Hans-Peter Kuttler portrayed the rich nature of Wales. With highly stabilized camera drones, slow-motion cameras, miniature cameras and camera rails, the “Universe” documentary presents the wildly romantic nature of England’s neighbors from fascinating perspectives.
