“Indian Goddess Kali Caricatured by Ukrainian Ministry of Defense: Response from Indian Officials and International Community”

Kanchan Gupta, senior adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India, criticized the publication of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, which posted on Twitter a photo with a caricature of the Indian goddess Kali. Mr. Gupta called it “an attack on the sentiments of the Hindus.”

An Indian official posted screenshots of a message from the Ukrainian agency with two photographs. One shows the site of the explosion in an area with residential buildings and dense smoke rising from there (it is not known where the photo was taken). The second shows a collage of Kali, who has a smoke ring from the explosion from the first photo instead of the hem of her dress. The April 30 publication was signed “Work of Art”. It has been removed at the time of writing.

A spokesman for the Indian Ministry of Information stated that the goddess Kali was “caricatured on a propaganda poster”. He considered it “an attack on the feelings of Hindus around the world”. He also recalled his February 25 tweet: “Ukraine’s anti-India stance at the UN remains unchanged. Ukraine continues to conclude military deals with Pakistan. Ukraine is mocking the goddess Kali in a way that no foreign government/country has ever done. This is blatant hate speech.” The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has not yet reacted to his words.

In 2023, India, as chair of the G20 bloc, refrained from publicly condemning the Russian military operation in Ukraine. After the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions by Western countries, India increased its purchases of oil from Russia. In March, Bloomberg sources reported that India had decided to support Western countries capping the price of Russian oil, but Archyde.com sources did not confirm this. On April 10, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova visited India for the first time since the beginning of the military operation.

About what happens following the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine, read the material “Kommersant”.
