“Revegetation: The Natural Solution for Maintaining Cemeteries Amidst Pesticide Bans”

With successive bans on the use of pesticides, the managers of Walloon cemeteries are turning to a new method to maintain the last resting place of our ancestors: revegetation, which consists of replacing gravel paths with more natural paths.

The goal here is to remove all the rolling gravel then we pass with a machine that will prepare the ground and then sow the grass seed“, explains Pierre Meyer, one of the landscapers in charge of this work.

A job that is becoming routine for him, he has already done it in around thirty cemeteries.

Vegetation is fashionable for two reasons: plant paths are more conducive to contemplation, because they make less noise than gravel. They also make it possible to comply with the various laws prohibiting chemicals.

Since 2017 and the ban on glyphosate and 2019 with the ban on the use of herbicides and pesticides, we must consider other solutions and they pass, for a reduction in maintenance work, through revegetation“, explains Lucien Bauduin, the mayor of Lobbes.

Two cemeteries in this town are currently under construction to carry out these arrangements. They will remain closed to the public until May 19 with one exception: Mother’s Day.
