“Revolutionary e-Corner System for the Hyundai Ioniq 5: 90° Wheel Maneuvers and More”

The e-Corner system can turn each wheel of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 up to 90 degrees and independently, allowing impressive maneuvers.

Hyundai Mobis, a branch of the Korean group working on innovations and concepts in both hardware and software, presented in January its e-Corner system mounted for the occasion on an Ioniq 5. It allows each wheel up to 90°, allowing maneuvers that no car can currently perform and that we can see today in action for the first time.

With all four wheels locked at right angles, then slotting becomes child’s play, as all the car has to do is stop in the right place and then move sideways, then sliding neatly into place. In the case of parking in battle, you can also rotate the car 90° by turning only the rear wheels. If you have taken the wrong direction, it is also possible to make a U-turn on the spot like a tank. Finally, overtaking maneuvers are also facilitated by the possibility of moving from one lane to another diagonally.

Be careful though, we are far from the only software evolution here, because this Ioniq 5 is deeply modified mechanically to accommodate the system: brakes and steering by wire made to measure, suspensions completely redesigned to be integrated and hub motors are thus essential to achieve these controlled stunts. Unsurprisingly, Mobis therefore does not specify whether a production start is planned, the probability being high, given the investment requested, that this does not go beyond the technical demonstrator stage for Hyundai. But we should perhaps find some functions on the Mercedes EQG expected next year.
