The smartphone market is currently gloomy. Is a rebound possible?
The economic crisis and inflation have got the better of comfort purchases in a large number of households, even survival purchases (food, etc.). These difficult ends of the month for a large number of people obviously have an impact on the sales of high-tech products, starting with smartphones.
The smartphone market at half mast
In 2022, therefore, smartphone sales suffered a drop of around 11% and the first quarter of the new year did not improve things. According to Canalys, the telephone market contracted by 12% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and IDC announces for its part a drop of nearly 15%.
As you will have understood, fewer and fewer smartphones are being sold, it is even the seventh consecutive quarter to follow this trend. These poor results are – often in part – at the origin of decisions that will not help the market: price increases, stoppage of sales in certain countries, reduction of ranges, etc.
Ecology is better off
Although this may ultimately lead to a reduction in competition, far from being beneficial for the consumer, the drop in sales of new products is rather good news for the planet. It is accompanied by an increase in second-hand or refurbished sales, thus making it possible to set up a circular economy which bodes well.
At the same time, the phone market seems to have reached a glass ceiling, or at least a plateau. The products are more and more resistant over time and the novelties pushing for renewal are becoming increasingly rare.
