Sometimes doctors even make a diagnosis – a viral infection.
Allergic rhinitis can turn into bronchial asthma.
“Each year, the allergy season starts at different times,” said Dmitry Buza, chief freelance specialist in pediatric allergology at the Ministry of Health, head of the allergology department at the 4th Children’s Clinical Hospital in Minsk. – Peaks of flowering are observed every 2-5 years. Because of this, there are more visits to the doctor. If last year active flowering was recorded from May 1 to May 10, then this year it is already at the end of April. And that means the peak of seeking medical help.
Seasonal allergies in children often look like the common cold. Any allergy has its origins. If we are talking regarding seasonal allergies, it starts in childhood, usually from 7-10 years old.
Late diagnosis of allergies is a common problem. With seasonal allergies, most children experience nasal congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes. In such a situation, when contacting a doctor, initially, as a rule, a diagnosis of a viral infection is made. This is due to the delay in the diagnosis, which can be 2-3 years. When they notice that allergy symptoms are observed seasonally, at the same time, they begin to wonder if this is an allergy. And the pediatrician refers the child to an allergist to confirm the diagnosis, explained the chief freelance specialist in pediatric allergology.
“Less than 1% of the population of Belarus turns to allergists because of seasonal allergies,” says the chief freelance allergist-immunologist of the Ministry of Health, associate professor of the department of pulmonology and phthisiology with a course in allergology, immunology and occupational pathology of BelMAPE Sergei Artishevsky. – Seasonal allergies are of particular interest and are well known to everyone, because with the advent of pollen load, the number of calls increases, including to allergologists. Today, an average of 40-45 thousand people annually turn to allergologists with the problem of pollen allergy, hay fever, which is less than 1% of the population of Belarus.
However, it is assumed that in reality there are much more patients with seasonal manifestations of allergic diseases. Many simply do not get an appointment with allergists. In Europe, the frequency of hay fever varies from 2% in Norway, Sweden, to 36% in Italy, Portugal and Spain.
Few people know, but in 30% of patients, allergic rhinitis turns into bronchial asthma, which in the future affects everyday life and the choice of profession. In Belarus, bronchial asthma is treated at the expense of the state. Doctors treat seasonal allergies with full responsibility, carry out preventive measures to prevent the progress and formation of bronchial asthma. For symptomatic treatment, antihistamines are usually used. But there is also a number of important tips that the doctor gives to these patients: following rain, you need to be outside more. But in dry, sunny, windy weather, if possible, walk less in the fresh air, do not leave the city.
