Because of an imminent eruption of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz in Colombia, the residents of several surrounding towns are to leave their homes and apartments. The South American country’s civil protection agency announced on Saturday that it would evacuate all places within a 15-kilometer radius of the volcano’s main crater.
The Ministry of Mines announced that seismic activity at Nevado del Ruiz in western Colombia, which is more than 5,300 meters high, has recently increased significantly. The geological authority SGC warned that an eruption might now be expected “within days or weeks”.
Nevado del Ruiz is one of 25 active volcanoes in Colombia. After an eruption on November 13, 1985, 25,000 people were killed by a mudslide. In the town of Armero, half of the 50,000 inhabitants died. It was the country’s worst natural disaster and one of the most devastating volcanic eruptions of the 20th century.
Once once more, the greatest danger to the population is a mudslide of water, ash and rock that might be triggered by the melting of snow and ice on the volcano’s slopes.
