From the moment of its construction in 1916, the Medina Palace or Palacio de los Rodríguez, the current headquarters of the Prado Theater Museum, has been a reference, first architectural and now cultural, of Medellín.

In 1919 he won the contest for “The most beautiful facade of Medellín” and in 1925 the film was recorded there Under the Antioquian skyone of the first productions of the film industry in Colombia.

In this Palladian-style building, ex-president Carlos E. Restrepo was veiled, the now-defunct Antioquia Symphony Orchestra began, and the great artists who arrived in Medellín in the second half of the 20th century for performances at the Junín Theater and the Circus were housed. Spain.

Since 1988 it has been the headquarters of the Teatro Águila Descalza, the group led by Cristina Toro and Carlos Mario Aguirre, who have invested in the culture and heritage of the sector.

the new plans

“El solar del Águila Descalza” is a cultural project that Cristina and Carlos Mario are championing to integrate the Prado Theater with two properties located on the next block, two of them declared cultural heritage of the city of Medellín.

The first house is Ángeles, an imposing building with a white façade, where Carlos Mario Aguirre himself lived, located on Calle 59, half a block from the current headquarters, and the second is the former headquarters of the Faes (Antioqueña Foundation for Social Studies ), on race 45.

Both are communicated by their lots, which will allow their cultural integration.

“We want to become a tourist destination for people to travel and recognize history, in this case architectural and cultural,” says Cristina Toro.

They are currently working on the house that served as the Faes headquarters to adapt it as an alternative room, with a bar-restaurant and a stage, with capacity for regarding 80 to 100 people, for the presentation of stand up comedy and musical shows.

Cristina defines it as a place of artistic projection in all its modalities: museum, art gallery, academic training and gastronomic center, where the Águila administrative offices will also be transferred.

“It has a large plot in the center of which there are hundred-year-old trees and a large plant sculpture 10 meters high that contains set elements of the group and objects that are part of the city’s urban memory”, details the actress, poet and writer.

Integration

There are more than 1,420 square meters of the Faes house that will be destined for the culture and social recovery of the Prado neighborhood.

It is connected by its plot with the Ángeles house, where Carlos Mario Aguirre keeps his personal collection of books, more than 25,000 copies, many of them true jewels.

In the Águila they remember that several years ago he was recognized for having the largest personal collection of books in Latin America.

Carlos Mario himself announced his interest in donating all his texts so that they remain available to the public as a future development of El solar del Águila.

The books are displayed on enormous scaffolding distributed throughout the length and breadth of the house.

The Franz Kafka Library Institution joined the project, which will offer different academic activities at the new headquarters. They will be responsible for much of the programming that will take place there, highlights Cristina Toro, highlighting the work of Carlos Mario González, Santiago Alarcón, Alejandro López and Lina Pulido with the Kafka Library.

And the current headquarters?

In the traditional Prado Theater, which in 1991 the Municipality of Medellín declared the property as an asset of architectural, cultural and urban interest, will continue the main hall with capacity for 461 spectators, while its terraces, halls and galleries will become a great museum. , where the works of Carlos Mario Aguirre himself will be exhibited.

Thanks to the Solar and the Prado Theater Museum, the sector will become in the coming months (the idea is that the Faes house is open in the second semester) in a large cultural block with access to Chile and El Palo streets and through the Cuba road.

The work Luna de Mier returns to Medellín…

Carlos Mario y Cristina is currently in Cali (there are three weekends) with performances of his new comedy Honeymoon… which has been a phenomenon at the box office. From May 11 to 10 they will be in Bogotá and in June they will return to the city for a season throughout the month at the Teatro Prado.

“The play has been a crazy thing that people have identified with because it addresses issues that people need to see in a different way, such as the wear and tear of relationships, infidelity and new ways of accepting love.”
