“Russia and Belarusian Athletes at International Sports Competitions: Condemning Politicization – Moscow’s Official Stance”

2023-04-29 06:19:30

Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Vershinin said that Moscow condemns the politicization of the issue of the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international sports competitions. So he commented on the relevant restrictions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“Our principled position is that this issue cannot be politicized, people must not be deprived of sports events, participation in sports events on political grounds,” Mr. Vershinin told reporters (quoted by TASS).

The decisions of the IOC were made public on March 28: the committee recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes be admitted to international competitions in a neutral status. The recommendations concerned only individual disciplines and those athletes who did not support Russia’s military operations in Ukraine (the recommendations do not apply to the 2024 Olympic Games).

IOC President Thomas Bach has repeatedly spoken out once morest the politicization of international competitions, but the possible participation of Russia, in particular, in the 2024 Olympics, was criticized by more than 30 states.
