Uman, Ukraine (AFP) – Kiev said preparations for a counteroffensive once morest Russian troops were nearing completion following Russian missile attacks on cities across Ukraine killed 26 people, including five children.
Residential areas in the historic city of Uman in central Ukraine were also included in a new wave of deadly Russian attacks, with AFP reporters seeing rescuers exhuming victims from destroyed residential buildings.
The Russian military launched numerous missile strikes overnight, ending weeks of calm. Prior to this, the Russian army continued to launch attacks on Ukraine in an attempt to paralyze the Ukrainian power grid during the winter.
Russian forces also launched a missile attack on the city of Dnipro, killing a 31-year-old woman and her 2-year-old daughter and sending the woman’s parents to hospital. The central Ukrainian city was also attacked in January, killing more than 40 people.
Russian forces shelled the village of Bilozerk, killing one and injuring three, authorities in Unan’s Kherson said tonight.
Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, was also the target of the attack, but there were no reports of casualties.
The Russian attack came just following Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said preparations for a counterattack once morest Russian positions were nearing completion.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said yesterday that NATO and its partners had supplied Ukraine with 1,550 armed vehicles and 230 combat vehicles and helped Ukraine retake part of its territory from Russian forces.
“The equipment has been promised, prepared and partly supplied, in a global sense we are ready,” Reznikov said, adding that “preparations are almost complete” for a counteroffensive.
“Once there is providence, the weather and the commander decides, we will do it,” he said.
