The heads of the lists of the Union of Forces for Progress (UFP/opposition) in the legislative elections of May 13, 2023, faced the press on Friday at the start of the followingnoon, a few hours following the start of the electoral campaign.
A meeting during which they announced the color in relation to what will be their contribution to the democratic debate within parliament with regard to the mission of monitoring government action, the legal prerogatives of proposing laws and the role of future elected members of the training in the animation of the regional and municipal assemblies, in case the voters would make them
trust.
First to speak, Brahim Bedde, National Campaign Director, recalled the party’s role and historical contribution in the fight for democratic gains and their preservation over the past 50 years and especially the opening up following the serious crisis of the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 1990s.
Professor Lô Gourmo, vice-president and head of the national list of the UFP for the legislative elections of May 13, 2023, focused his speech on the need to achieve a dynamic and strong consensus around national unity.
The UFP candidate then declined “the party’s strategy for the next elections: to open up to all the active forces to ensure a qualitative presence in parliament, to fully play the role of representatives of the people in the vote bills, give concrete content to the parliamentary prerogatives of bills and relay the concerns of the populations to the governance on a daily basis” to give a decisive impetus to the democratic debate and to the action of the national representation.
The vice-president of the UFP then put the knife in the wound by recalling the many problems which overwhelm Mauritania.
Thus, the national representation elected at the end of the legislative elections of May 2023 should urge the government to find consensual solutions to the challenges and issues that condition the future of the country by finding a definitive solution to the bottlenecks that weigh down any prospect of development.
He cited as an example the humanitarian liabilities of the years of Taya power, the question of Mauritanian victims of abuses in Senegal in April 1989, the historical plague of slavery, the problem of governance, the equitable distribution of resources , corruption, the precariousness of retirement which leads to real social decline and the calamitous management of the Cheikh Ridha affair.
