A man has died of an eye hemorrhage in Senegal, officials at the Senegalese Ministry of Health said, raising fears of an outbreak of Ebola-like Congo fever.
The 35-year-old began experiencing flu-like symptoms, including a fever, and then began to experience eye bleeding.
Congo fever is a viral disease that is usually transmitted by ticks and livestock, and it is possible to transmit the infection from one person to another through contact.
It comes as Africa grapples with a new outbreak of Marburg virus, a hemorrhagic disease like Congo fever.
Symptoms appear suddenly and include:
- Fever.
- muscle pain
- Dizziness.
- Neck pain and stiffness.
- Back pain.
- headache.
- ophthalmia.
- photosensitivity
- After two to four days, mood swings and confusion will be replaced by drowsiness and depression.
- Critically ill patients will experience rapid kidney failure and sudden liver and heart failure about five days after they become ill.
- Congo fever is fatal in about a third of cases, and causes death about two weeks after infection.
