Steam Deck was released by Valve as their powerful handheld console. However, the videogame received a new use by the Ukrainian army in its conflict with Russia.

Ukrainian news website TPO posted several images on Facebook revealing that soldiers are testing a new weapon called Sablya. It is described as a remote automatic weapon that can be deployed to protect vehicles or facilities.

However, when checking the photos closely, it is possible to see the soldier holding a Steam Deck. The laptop with Linux operating system is being used as a remote control to handle Sablya.

You can’t see the interface on the console, but since the weapon has a camera, it should be what the operator will see on the Steam Deck display. With this, the portable might be used to monitor the battlefield, aim at targets and fire bursts of fire.

Some users speculate that the weapon should be fully automated and the Steam Deck should only be used to mark targets, while the machine gun does the rest without the need for additional commands.

Sablya can be operated from over 500 meters away and can even be equipped with anti-tank weaponry such as a Kalashnikov machine gun. The post says the weapon will be placed at strategic points to help the Ukrainian army in the conflict once morest Russia.

This isn’t the first time equipment designed for video games has been given military uses. In 2018, the US Army unveiled the submarine USS Colorado, which is controlled by an Xbox 360 joystick.
