Fenninger: “Too many job-seekers are affected by poverty”
Vienna (OTS) – Volkshilfe makes the Day of the Unemployed on April 30th. drew attention to the precarious situation of many job-seekers. For the director of Volkshilfe Austria, “it is incomprehensible why the government sets so few accents in the area of the labor market. There are still 334,000 unemployed and 133,000 living at or below the at-risk-of poverty line. For them, increasing the net replacement rate to 70% of final income is a matter of decent living. Because in view of the inflation rates, low earners in particular cannot live on 55% of their last salary.”
Measures for the long-term unemployed
But other measures are also missing to get people back into work. “More efforts are still needed to reintegrate around 80,000 long-term unemployed people into the labor market. The demand for workers is enormous, and human potential can be tapped here through training and qualification and good working conditions. And for those who, for whatever reason, cannot be placed in normal employment, there needs to be a job guarantee and thus the right to a place in a regulated, decent second labor market,” says Fenninger.
activities in the federal states
The Volkshilfe state organizations, which offer transit jobs in many socio-economic companies, also advocate structural improvements for (long-term) unemployed people. They criticize the multiple disadvantages and burdens of unemployed people: Long-term unemployment is often not only accompanied by drastic financial bottlenecks, but also has a negative psychological and physical effect.
In order to break the negative spiral of unemployment-illness-poverty, the Volkshilfe Salzburg, together with many organizations from their federal state, pointed out the importance of measures to enable sick unemployed people to participate in social life at a press conference. Volkshilfe Oberösterreich was present with information stands in its districts, in particular to highlight the precarious situation of the long-term unemployed and to demand political measures. Volkshilfe Wien, together with other organizations, presented a comprehensive action plan for concrete improvements in the labor market.
