(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jang Bo-in = National Human Rights Commission Commissioner Song Doo-hwan requested that labor rights be respected in the process of reorganizing the working hour system in a statement on the 28th, marking the 133rd Labor Day on the 1st of next month.
Chairman Song said, “It has been less than two years since the ‘maximum 52-hour week’ was fully implemented in line with the global trend of reducing working hours. The issue of working hour reform must continue from the viewpoint of protecting labor rights.”
“The history of labor laws and labor movements is the history of the struggle for reduced working hours,” he said. Long working hours and industrial accidents are absolutely not irrelevant,” he pointed out.
In addition, he emphasized that the government should realize the rights and fulfill the obligations of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Framework Convention ratified.
Chairman Song said, “Considering Korea’s status in the international community, domestic laws must be reformed to meet international labor standards in order to faithfully implement the ILO Basic Convention. Laws and systems must be interpreted and actively applied in a way that respects international law.” said
“The Human Rights Commission will continue to make efforts to improve labor rights in our society in accordance with international labor standards and in an advanced direction,” he promised.
