South Sudan has announced that around 16,000 of its nationals have fled neighboring Sudan since fighting erupted there regarding two weeks ago.
“Since the beginning of the fighting in Sudan, regarding 16,000 of our compatriots have arrived, in addition to the arrival of refugees of other nationalities, including Sudan,” Humanitarian Affairs Minister Albino Akol Atakvi said on Wednesday during a meeting. ‘a press conference.
He added that “returnees enter the country through 12 border points”, explaining that a “large number” of his country’s citizens are still in Sudan.
The official said that a total of around 40,000 people have taken refuge in his country, coming from the northern neighbor, which is experiencing fighting between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (FSR).
“We welcomed the returnees and placed them in temporary reception centres, determined where they would go and then organized transport for them to reach their destinations,” he continued.
In this regard, the Acting Foreign Minister of South Sudan, Deng Dau Deng Malik, said that his country has welcomed nationals of different nationalities.
“Those fleeing the conflict in Sudan face many problems, so they fled without passports or even ID cards,” he noted.
