For a long time it looked like a big one Basketball festival, but then some fuses went completely haywire.
The basketball game in the EuroLeague between Real Madrid and Partizan Belgrade had to be stopped following a wild brawl on the field!
Basketball: EuroLeague game between Partizan and Real escalates completely
With the score of 95:80 for away team Partizan, chaos began. When Real player Sergio Llull hit a foul on Belgrade professional Kevin Punter at chest level, there was a large pack formation.
First Llull and Punter attacked each other, then more tumult between other players followed.
Crazy: Real’s Guerschon Yabusele choked Dante Exum and just threw him on the ground! Scenes that are otherwise only known from the MMA league UFC or from the wrestling organization WWE.
Even family members sprinted onto the field to calm tempers. After a few minutes they succeeded. But nothing helped: the game had to be stopped!
Because: The referees pronounced disqualifying fouls once morest more than 20 players. So there were too few players to continue.
Bitter: The prostrate Exum limped out of the hall. According to Partizan’s doctor Moma Jakovljevic, he tore a tendon in his toe during Yabusele’s scandalous action. His lip was also injured.
“We talk regarding the players having emotions, but it was the end of the game and nothing really happened (which triggered the incident),” said Partizan coach Zeljko Obradovic in the press conference.
Real Madrid captain Rudy Fernandez said: “After what we went through today, we have to apologize to our fans, to every basketball fan. We can’t just let these kinds of incidents happen, but as players we have emotions and we make mistakes. Today was one of those days. We consider Partizan as a friendly team, coach Zeljko knows this hall very well and we all feel the same. The tension has to stop here and we just have to play basketball for the fans to enjoy the EuroLeague.”
The next game between the two is already in the starting blocks: In the EuroLeague playoffs, Real and Partizan will play once morest each other in the first round. With a buzzer beater, the Serbs surprisingly won the first game 89:87 on Tuesday. So now comes the second win in the best-of-five series.
The third game will take place on May 2nd in the usually extremely heated atmosphere in Belgrade’s Stark Arena. “I’ll try to calm things down because I have a lot of friends at Real Madrid, it’s a great club and we have to welcome them to Belgrade,” concludes the Belgrade coach.
However, it can be expected that many professionals involved in the brawl will not be able to participate in the next game. The EuroLeague is tough on scandals like this and usually penalizes players for multiple games.
