The Viennese pianist and composer Christoph Cech has been known as the tamer of big jazz animals since the 1980s – for example with the big band Nouvelle Cuisine, which he still leads together with Christian Mühlbacher. The sum of all his experiences has been manifested for some time in the Christoph Cech Jazz Orchestra Project (CCJOP). In addition to two voices and an extensive woodwind and brass section, the 27-strong ensemble also includes a string quartet and a large rhythm section, with double bass and drums: This allows Cech to fully live out all his compositional desires.
In a streamlined, “only” 18-strong cast, Cech presented the colorful, powerful, then once more chamber music sound of the CCJOP on August 20, 2022 at the Saalfelden Jazz Festival. The concert was enthusiastically acclaimed. And Christoph Cech liked the Ö1 recording by Tonmeister Martin Leitner so much that it was recently released on CD by Alessa Records under the title “Healthy Tree”.
So it’s also fitting that the CCJOP is currently acting as a stage band in the Viennese jazz club Porgy & Bess.
There, another great ensemble concludes its Austrian tour in mid-May. Two well-known local ensembles have joined forces for this: On the one hand, the Vorarlberg Jazz Orchestra, founded in 2005 by trumpeter Martin Eberle, among others, and on the other hand, the band 5/8er in Ehr’n, which has existed since 2006 and features singers Max Gaier and Bobby Slivovsky, who are successful with humorous dialect texts is.
On July 21, 2021, they met at Glatt & Verkehrt in Krems with a musical and conspiratorial intention to merge into FC Hollywood: The Vorarlbergers, who had traveled in nonet formation, and the five members of the “Viennese Soul” combo interpreted classics from the 5/8 repertoire, with “Alaba – How Do You Do” of course not missing. This Ö1 recording has also just been released as an LP and CD with the name “Live in der Wachau.”
