As of April 27, people 80 and older and those 18 and older with weakened immune systems can make an appointment to receive the shingles vaccine free of charge.
From May, it will be possible to be vaccinated in vaccination centers as well as in pharmacies. To make an appointment, the people concerned can do so by clicking on Clic Santé or by telephone at 1 877-644-4545.
This new vaccination program, put forward by the Ministry of Health and Social Services, aims to reduce the number of cases of the disease and the complications associated with it.
“It includes two doses of the inactivated shingles vaccine for people aged 80 and over as well as for immunocompromised people aged 18 and over,” the government website says.
Up to one in three people will have an episode of shingles in their lifetime, according to the ministry. Neuralgia is the most common complication.
“It is a pain that can be felt for several months or even years along the path of the affected nerve. The risk of neuralgia increases with age and in a person with a weakened immune system,” it explains.
In Quebec, each year, there are approximately 27,000 cases of shingles as well as 600 hospitalizations and 10 deaths caused by this disease.
Vaccination reduces the risk of developing shingles, but also the risk of neuralgia following an episode.
Fees for 50 to 79 year olds
People between the ages of 50 and 79 can also receive the vaccine to reduce their risk of developing the disease. However, they must pay to receive it and the fees may vary. For full details, they should contact their medical clinic or pharmacy.
