There are many ways to be in shape, but in this journey that we immerse ourselves in when we look for the more complete and effective exercise to tone the whole body in a different way, a winning option is the barre. A discipline that is not new -in the United States it has been causing a furor for years-, but that is currently fully fashionable in our country with its classes inspired by movements of ballet, pilates, yoga y fitness. We have talked regarding this discipline on other occasions, but this time we are going to focus on its possibilities as an exercise to get fit at any age and without having to sweat like there’s no tomorrow. Because sweating is not always synonymous with efficient exercise.
This exercise can be started at any age.
Of the benefits of the barre for body, posture and mind we have already spoken on other occasions, but it is a demanding discipline that is not suitable for all audiences. However, the barre takes a more approachable approach. This is how he explains it to us Nathalie Errandonea, creator of the NRG Barrebody method: ‘The benefits of this discipline are endless for both the body and the mind. You can start at 40, 50, 60 or 70 years old, since it is a much more accessible discipline than ballet in that sense. I do not want to say with this that you cannot start practicing ballet at 60, but it is easier to achieve your health and fitness goals with barre’, points out the expert, who defines this discipline as ‘an intelligent combination of classical ballet and Pilates combined with each other to provide a perfect physical exercise’.
A class impacts a lot on a muscular level
In fact, both Errandonea and Sidonie Geisweillercreator of Barrefit BCN, insist that practicing barre muscles are exercised whose existence was sometimes unknown and in a global way allows to strengthen the whole body. ‘The barre is usually more intense than yoga or pilates in terms of muscle fatigue (commonly known as a burning sensation) and allows a more analytical, more precise work. For example, when you are doing a plie in second gear, simply by holding this position you are doing an isometric exercise but you are also exercising arms, shoulders, obliques if you do twists… Let’s say that you make much more use of the hour that a session usually lasts,’ he points out. Geisweiller.
And no, you don’t need to sweat
When you do a barre class you don’t usually end up sweating as with other apparently more intense exercise disciplines, but you do have the feeling of have worked intensely at the muscular level. For all those who believe that the only way to get in shape is by sweating, it is important to keep this in mind: ‘Not only by sweating more or lifting more weight you are training better. You can do intense, analytical training and get results without breaking a sweat. An example is the barre, in which you work with your own weight and there is not such a cardiovascular implication’, points out the Barrefit BCN expert. To which Errandonea adds: ‘You don’t need to sweat to get a good workout. It is true that it can serve as an indicator, but there are others such as heart rate or perceived effort. If you feel like you’ve worked hard, it’s probably been a good workout even if you finish completely dry, not a drop of sweat’, Explain. In fact, and although sometimes the barre also makes you sweat because the cardio element is present, the focus is above all the muscle workr –burning in the legs during a barré class is common– and postural. Because barre is one of the disciplines that more favors postural hygiene with all that this implies for general well-being (sleep, digestion, hormonal problems…) Some apps and directions to practice it.
