The Volkswagen battery subsidiary Power-Co started construction of a gigafactory in Valencia today in the presence of the Spanish king and prime minister. It is to start production of the unit cell in three years and provide jobs for over 3,000 people. Further plants are built in Salzgitter and in Canada.
The annual production capacity is initially 40 GWh and can be expanded to 60 GWh. The cell factory is being built in Sagunto, in the immediate vicinity of Valencia, on an area of around 130 hectares. In addition, a supplier park is being built. Among other things, the availability of green electricity, good transport links and the proximity to Seat’s Spanish production sites played a role in the location decision.
In the future, the Gigafabrik will supply the vehicle plants in Martorell and Pamplona, among others. The energy supply comes entirely from wind and solar energy, including from a 250-hectare solar park in the immediate vicinity of the plant. (awm)
