A few days before Apple’s next financial results, Canalys has observed a general drop in smartphone shipments around the world… with a small exception for iPhones.

Mac sales may not not be good at all if we are to believe the various analysis firms, but those of the iPhone would not be too bad according to Canalys, despite an unfavorable climate for manufacturers.

269.8 million smartphones were delivered to distributors in the last quarter, a decline of 13% on 2022 (311.2 million). In the top 5 manufacturers, Samsung regains its first place from Apple, but without fireworks. The South Korean is credited with 60.3 million Galaxy sold, that’s 18% less than a year ago, while the Californian’s subcontractors would have shipped 58 million iPhones, that’s 3% better.

Xiaomi (30.5 million devices) then Oppo and Vivo follow at a good distance. All show deliveries at half mast compared to those of 2022, with respectively -22, -8 and -17%. It was necessary to skim the stocks already in circulation.

iPhone sales fell in late 2022, but not as much as competitors

As an explanation for Apple’s resistance, the Asia Pacific region would have been particularly demanding in iPhone, says Canalys. The Apple stores in particular would attract a “ burgeoning middle class that attaches great importance to purchases made in situ ».

It is from the second half that 2023 deliveries should return to the levels of the previous year, so there would not be a big rebound in strong general growth to be expected in the coming months. Apple will release its fiscal second quarter results next week.

Apple’s Q2 2023 results will be known on May 4
