Caught in the hollow of a canyon, three hikers avoid the worst thanks to their cell phones

Three hikers who got stuck in the pool of water at the bottom of a canyon in the United States avoided the worst thanks to a new function in one of their cell phones.

“Nothing was working, and we got to a point where we had been in the water for three or four hours and I was really starting to feel the hypothermia and losing [espoir]“, told one of them in an interview with Good Morning America, presented on the ABC television channel on Monday.

On a trip to celebrate their pre-graduation last week, the three friends from Brigham Young University reportedly overestimated their ability when faced with a pool of water at the bottom of a canyon nicknamed The Squeeze in Utah.

“We were quite confident in our abilities, but with the water, the hypothermia and just the fatigue, we may have overestimated our abilities,” admitted a second on television.

“I was starting to surrender to the idea that we would spend the night there,” added another.

Caught in water up to their chests, the three friends first tried to climb on top of each other to gain height and reach a signal, in vain.

It was then that one of them realized that he had brought with him his iPhone 14, whose brand new feature, introduced in 2022, would make it possible to make calls or send texts to the emergency services via satellite.

This feature would work even when traditional cell service or wifi is not available, the English-language media said.

“To see that the phone was connected and the text message went away, it was a huge feeling of relief,” said the third, thanking heaven for still being alive today.

The three hikers were finally rescued in the middle of the night, following managing to climb on a dry part to light a fire.

They advise those eager for adventure to always carry a satellite phone, matches, emergency blankets, extra food and dry clothes, in addition to informing a loved one of their whereregardings.

According to ABC, the new feature had already proven itself in December following a couple lost control of their vehicle, falling nearly 250 feet into a canyon in California.
