Every year, in May, the ARSEP foundation – Help with research on the multiple sclerosis – organizes its national awareness campaign on this inflammatory disease of the central nervous system.
piggy banks in town
On this occasion, its members leave piggy banks with merchants to encourage customers to make a donation or give some of their change for the benefit of scientific research.
In the south of Eure, it is Nelly Billon, a 55-year-old woman living Boissy-les-Perche (Eure-et-Loir)) and having grown up Verneuil-sur-Avre (Eure), which organizes, for the third consecutive year, this solidarity operation.
“Eight merchants have agreed to be partners in the collection which starts on Monday 1is May until the end of the month which also includes a particular date, that of May 30, 2023World Multiple Sclerosis Day,” says Nelly Billon.
For research
In 2022, Nelly had thus collected €136 with five piggy banks (compared to €296 two years ago with ten piggy banks). Money which, added to that collected at national level, made it possible to exceed €29,000 in 2022, “a sum allocated to a therapeutic research project on multiple sclerosis carried out by Severine Morisset-Lopez, of the CNRS of Orléans”.
However, Nelly firmly believes in the advances of science. “Suffering from multiple sclerosis today is not like in the past. Being myself affected by this disease since May 2020, I can tell you that thanks to my treatments – combined with physiotherapy, reflexology and sophrology – my condition has stabilized and I no longer suffer from immobilizing pain attacks”, recognizes Nelly who even works part-time as quality coordinator at the Verno plant Aptar.
Gym, jogging and dancing
As a bonus, she started pilates at the Vernolian Blue Orange “which does me a lot of good”, as well as light jogging – more or less 1 km – since the end of 2022 and, more recently, to modern dance, so many activities that she might not do at all at the beginning of her illness.
Where to give change
Le Jardin des Gourmets bakery, rue Porte de Mortagne; La Tourelle bakery, rue Notre-Dame; Les Délices de la Tour bakery, place de la Madeleine; Capucine florist, Place de la Madeleine; The Press House, rue Thiers; Arôme Aesthetic Institute in Place de la Madeleine; Cheeses and terroir, place de la Madeleine; the Café de la paix, rue Thiers and the Aptar company, rue Jacquart.
The fact remains that Nelly still has to deal with regular tingling in her hands and feet, as well as permanent fatigue forcing her to rest a little at midday, typical disorders of her disease.
Hope
This is why it relies heavily on research to finally find the remedy that will defeat multiple sclerosis and further improve treatments allowing patients to live better.
So if everyone makes a small gesture by donating a little of their change when shopping at participating merchants, it will help to restore hope to the families of the sick.
