In the proceedings surrounding the recently uncovered data leak from US secret service documents, the prosecution is demanding that the arrested military IT specialist be kept in prison. The prosecutors argue in a letter that was submitted to the court before a detention hearing scheduled for this Thursday. 21-year-old Jack Teixeira faces at least 25 years in prison if convicted.

He continues to be a major threat to national security. “He may still have access to a wealth of classified information that would be of tremendous value to enemy states,” the 18-page letter said. “These might provide him with a safe haven and try to facilitate his escape from the US.” The information that Teixeira had access to went far beyond what was previously known: “The damage that the accused can still cause is extraordinary.”

According to the public prosecutor, Teixeira’s lawyers want him to be released from prison until further notice and be allowed to live with his father. The National Guardsman was arrested on April 13 in his hometown of North Dighton, Massachusetts. He is suspected of having published a whole series of secret papers in a chat room, including on the Ukraine war. From there, they spread across the web. Teixeira is charged with the unauthorized removal, storage and transmission of classified information and national defense information.

In the letter, dated April 26, prosecutors argue that Teixeira has a worrying history of racist and violent speech. He was suspended from high school for comments regarding guns and Molotov cocktails. Several weapons were found in his room when he was arrested. In the chat room he said, among other things, that if it were up to him he would “kill a lot of people” because it would “eliminate the weak”.
