Recently before going to bed, I checked my emails. There was a message from a friend I had recently met, a person who had struck me as charming and intelligent. She told me that she had “walked for the climate” from Pully to Puidoux. It is a distance of regarding nine kilometers.
I did not answer him personally. Today, at the risk of losing her friendship (and many others), I’m going to respond to her publicly – to her and to the millions of people around the world who say they’re “walking for the climate”, that is- that is, “you are not walking for the climate, you are walking for yourselves”.
“I don’t think anyone knows what the climate is.”
I say this for several reasons. The first is that I don’t believe anyone, including my friend, knows what “climate” is. The climate is not a thing. It is not an identifiable and finite thing. It is a complex “flow” of “matter” that is constantly changing and infinitely complicated. Anyone who claims to know or understand “the climate” is, in my opinion, an impostor. Of course, millions – if not billions – of people around the world today talk regarding “climate” as if they “know” what they are talking regarding. I don’t think anyone knows. I’m not trying to be disruptive or play smart. I’m just trying to be honest.
For nearly 2,000 years the West believed that God created the world, that Jesus was born of a virgin mother and died to save us from our sins, that heaven and hell awaited the resurrected dead, and that man was “free” but the rest of “nature” was not. People who did not believe in these things were ridiculed, ostracized, tortured, imprisoned and even massacred. The image of Jesus on the cross was like a tattoo on the Western mind. She represented the “reality” and the “truth” of the world. Today, I dare say, we have replaced Jesus on the cross with the polar bear on the melting iceberg. And we replaced “save our souls” with “save the planet”. We think we “know” the truth today, just like our ancestors.
Silenced
I think that neither yesterday nor today do we hold “the truth” regarding the universe and how it works. It is entirely reasonable for me to believe that despite ‘science’ and technology, we are far from understanding reality, including how the so-called ‘climate’ works. Moreover, we don’t even know how our own mind works and our greatest physicists don’t even know what “matter” is.
I’m not the only one to think so. However, given the nature of the human herd, people who did not believe in “Christianity” were silenced for nearly two millennia. Today, people who dare to doubt what is commonly called “climate change” are similarly gagged, ostracized and censored.
