Three 18-year-olds who would have found nothing better to do than throw large rocks at cars on the evening of April 19 will now face murder charges following one of their victims died.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado said on Wednesday it had completed an investigation into a series of wrongdoings that ended in the death of 20-year-old Alexa Bartell, making the arrest suspects.
According to the police, the three defendants amused themselves by throwing large landscaping stones at moving cars on the evening of April 19. For regarding twenty minutes, they hit at least five vehicles, causing various damage to the first four, mainly to the windows or the bodywork. One of the stones shattered a windshield, slightly injuring a motorist.
Things went wrong when Alexa Bartell took to the road at the wheel of the Chevrolet Spark, unaware of the danger awaiting her. A stone thrown by one of the suspects went through his windshield, fatally hitting him.
“In the moments before her death, Alexa was talking on the phone with a friend when the line went dead. Alexa’s friend located her phone and drove to the designated spot on Indiana Street. She found Alexa injured in her car, which was in a field on the side of the road,” the sheriff’s office said.
The three suspects – Joseph Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak – are all 18 years old. They face charges of first degree murder and extreme indifference. Other charges might also be added, authorities have warned.
