A spokesman for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has denied speculation regarding his health. Communications Director Fahrettin Altun yesterday shared images of tweets claiming that Erdogan had suffered a heart attack, writing: “We categorically reject such unsubstantiated claims regarding the President’s health.” Erdogan will attend a nuclear power plant opening today via video conference.
According to the state news agency Anadolu, Vice President Fuat Oktay said Erdogan was doing well. “We are in constant contact. He’s caught a little cold.”
On Tuesday evening, Erdogan (69) had to interrupt a TV interview because of stomach problems. He then took a campaign break and canceled all appearances for yesterday. On the short message service Twitter, he had announced that the complaints were only minor. However, he is resting on the advice of his doctors. Parliamentary and presidential elections will be held in Turkey on May 14.
Voting starts for Turks living abroad in Austria
Voting starts today for around three million Turks living abroad. Around 100,000 Turkish citizens in Austria can also take part in the polls in six locations – Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Bregenz.
The Turks abroad are traditionally seen as a strong support of Erdogan and his Islamic conservative AKP. In the presidential election in June 2018, Erdogan achieved an above-average result among Turks living abroad.
While he prevailed in Turkey with 52.6 percent, 59.4 percent of Turks living abroad voted for him. In Austria he even received 72.3 percent of the votes, only in Belgium and the Netherlands was it slightly more. However, participation was below average. In Austria, just under 49 percent of the 106,657 registered foreign Turks cast their votes.
