“Apple vs Epic Games: The Battle for Third-Party Payment Services in the App Store”

Apple won once morest Epic Games, but the appeals court agreed that the ban on the use of third-party payment services was anti-competitive.

Epic Games, the creator of the Fortnite video game, sued Apple back in 2020 following the tech giant removed the game from the App Store on the grounds that developers had circumvented Apple’s payment system. Epic allowed players to directly buy in-game money (V-Buck), which on the one hand campaigned once morest the fact that Apple only allows the use of its own payment system, which charges a 30% commission; and on the other hand, that the giant company prohibits the use of application stores operated by third parties.

According to the video game developers, the Apple company complies with the regulations in question “He wants to maintain his 100% monopoly”, however, in 2021 and in the most recent decision, the court found that Apple is not a monopoly in gaming applications. It was confirmed however, the fact that the giant prevents app developers from directing users to alternative payment methods stifles fair competition.

According to Tim Sweeney, the founder of Epic Games, Apple won the legal battle, but lost the war, as it will be forced to welcome third-party payment processors into its system.

If the decision goes into effect, web 3.0 application developers can also reap the benefits, and the lifting of restrictions may allow the use of cryptocurrencies within applications. Last September, Apple opened its App Store to NFTs, but added in a statement that it might charge up to a 30% share of app store purchases and money spent while using apps. The decision at the time was received with a bitter taste by those active in the industry, however, if Apple does not want to appeal once morest the court decision now, developers will be able to redirect users to websites that charge low fees when purchasing NFTs.
