The model range of the Atom brand of Russian electric vehicles will include analogues of the Mini Cooper, BMW i3 and Lada Largus. The start of mass production is scheduled for the end of 2024. Every year, 75,000 electric vehicles of all modifications, oriented to the markets of the CIS and China, will roll off the assembly line. A contract has already been signed for the development of a power plant with Chinese developers, which should speed up and reduce the cost of the process.

The Renera and Rusatom RDS companies, controlled by Rosatom, have announced a tender for the development of power plants for the Atom electric vehicle. According to the tender documentation, the Atom lineup will consist of four models: a single-seat Delivery for urban delivery, a two-seat Duo for recreational trips, a four-seat Taxi for taxi services, and a family five-seat Family. The mileage of any version following a full charge must be at least 500 km. Taxi and delivery models are limited to 130 km/h and others to 170 km/h. All models will be front-wheel drive and equipped with a power recovery system.

Of the planned 75,000 electric vehicles annually, Family models (49,100) should be produced the most, Delivery (15,000) is in second place, followed by Taxi (6600) and Duo (4300). In addition to the Russian market, electric vehicles are planned to be delivered to the CIS countries and China.

A spokesman for Rosatom said that “Taking into account the competencies we have, as well as the fact that the Atom electric vehicle requires not only a battery, but also a Russian-designed power unit, Rosatom structures are ready to conduct R&D in terms of a traction electric motor for better integration of future electric vehicle components”. In the fall of 2022, it was reported that the company was in talks to raise $150 million in investments for Kama JSC.

Renera, which plans to launch its gigafactory for the production of batteries in Kaliningrad at the end of 2025, ordered price monitoring in March for integration and testing of traction battery samples on Atom prototypes. The Contractor had to submit terms of reference for the battery management system and maintaining its operating temperatures, as well as a system integration plan. Until the end of May, the supplier must conduct power tests and testing the energy efficiency of the system at different temperatures. The delivery is planned to an ex-factory in China, the final recipient is Kama JSC.

Rener declined to comment on deliveries to a factory in China. The website of the School of Transportation of Nanjing Southeast University announces the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement with “European car company” Kama Atom with the participation of both Russian employees of Kama JSC and Chinese ATOM Automotive Engineering and Technology. A contract was signed for the first phase of the project, in particular, software development, battery and motor development, and integration testing.

Rusatom RDS announced a contract for the integration of a traction electric motor into Atom in the amount of 148.5 million rubles. By May 15, 2023, the supplier must develop a specification for the motor and a diagram of its high-voltage architecture and provide a test bench design. By May 30, the motor integration plan and CAN bus diagram must be ready, and the drive motor function specification and powertrain failure modes and effects analysis (DFMEA) must be submitted by July 30. Rusatom RDS and Kama JSC signed an agreement dated November 15, 2022, which is the basis for the work. Payment under the contract will be carried out in yuan.

China is actively developing a number of programs for the development of research centers, including those for foreign companies. The integration of Rosatom structures into the development of the power plant indicates their desire to become an integrated supplier of the battery, temperature maintenance system and engine. China has accumulated a lot of experience in developing batteries and other systems for different models and brands of electric vehicles, which can accelerate the development and production of electric vehicles.
