Presented in 2019, commissioned by STIB in 2020, the New Generation Tram is finally running on the Brussels network.

The first TNG vehicle was put into service on Wednesday morning on the northern section of line 51, between Brussels-Midi station and the Stade stop. This is one of the important parts of the tram plan for the Brussels-Capital region.

The TNG, or “Tram New Generation”, is intended to strengthen the tram offer in Brussels. “More spacious and more comfortable, it is equipped with wide doors and an integral low floor. Everything has been designed to facilitate access to the vehicle for people with reduced mobility, as well as to improve circulation and the comfort of passengers on board.“, communicated the STIB. Produced in Austria, this tram already runs in several other European cities, but this model has been customized for the streets of Brussels.

The new tram will be gradually rolled out in Brussels. It is already circulating in a short version of 32 meters, with 182 seats. A 43-meter long version, with 256 seats, is also being rolled out. 90 trams have been purchased by Stib to replace previous generations over the next few years.

This TNG was the subject of numerous tests before being put into service, specified the Stib. The Brussels government’s tram plan provides for the construction of several tram lines by 2035.
