The Mattel brand has just announced the release of a new Barbie doll, carrier of trisomy 21. The National Down Syndrome Society in the United States welcomes this approach, for better visibility of patients.

175. This is the number of Barbie models available on the market. A doll that evolves with the times since we are far from the sanitized blonde of the beginnings. Today, the Mattel brand seems eager to highlight minorities, disabilities, pathologies, etc. Thus it is possible to find dolls with vitiligo, others who use a wheelchair or a prosthesis, a doll equipped with hearing aids, etc.

Today, a new model is released, affected by Down syndrome, in other words, trisomy 21. This model introduces a new face shape, rounder, smaller ears, slightly slanted almond-shaped eyes. The doll’s palms even feature a single line. Features often typical of Down syndrome.

The coat colors, yellow and blue, are associated with Down Syndrome awareness. Even the necklace plays with symbolism since it represents three turned chevrons evoking the three copies of the 21st chromosome.
